Vinegar and Laundry Detergent are the two cheapest and readily available items that i advise when I advise my clients on simple carpet stain removal in Edmonton, Alberta.
Mix a small amount of laundry non-bleach detergent with water. I usually do a 1 to 10 ratio as I do not want to leave a lot of foam residue in the carpet. Also mix a 1 to 3 mixture of white vinegar. They can be used a s a first step to spot and stain removal.
Animal stain Example - The Kids have just dropped some gravy on your carpet.
!. Blot out, (dont rub) the excess gravy with an absorbant cotton cloth
2. Apply a small amount of diluted laundry detergent onto stain. let the enzymes in the detergent digest the stain for about 5 minutes.
3. Blot out the stain. Repeat unitl stain is removed.
There may be some foam residue left from the detergent. Apply a solution of one part vinegar to two parts water to break that down Blot it out.
Plant Stain Example - The kids have just spilled a soda on the carpet
